Sledge Family Road Trip 2017: Eugene & Portland

Who needs a book on a long drive when you can just stare at the box of your new Lego set?
One last In-N-Out. Xander's wearing the SFMOMA shirt he bought himself.

We met up with our friend Tim for dinner in Eugene.

The kids split this gigantic pretzel for dinner.

They also learned how to play table shuffle board.

Tim gave the kids really lovely gifts: some mementos from last year's Cub's World Series for X and a flipbook of his amazing wildlife photography for Clare.

The next morning we headed straight to Portland and the Nike Employee Store. It has been Xander's dream to go here, but it's not at all easy to do, since you have to either be an employee of Nike -- or be friends with one. A friend of mine was kind enough to give us a pass so we could shop the store, which is full of the latest Nike gear -- and all of it 40% off.

Xander was in heaven and we did some real damage in 90 minutes of very intense shopping. Such bargains, though!

Happy kid.

We stopped at Burgerville in Vancouver, Washington for lunch.

We thought it would be our last stop (except for a quick run into Seattle's Georgetown Brewery, so Michael could buy a hat) -- but we hadn't counted on the insanely slow traffic north of Seattle. We ended up eating at MOD Pizza in Burlington for dinner, and eventually -- happily -- getting home around 6:30 that night.

This and another lovely note from Chris and Amy was waiting for us, as they stayed at our house for a couple nights while we were gone. We had an amazing trip, but it felt so good to be home.
